abstract | 1,015,431. Discharge apparatus. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. July 24, 1962 [July 31, 1961; Jan. 8, 1962], No. 28382/62. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H3] The optical output from a phosphor layer in a vacuum or low pressure gas discharge tube is used to excite a laser (see Division H3). The phosphor may be suspended in, or form a slurry with, coolant flowing over the laser material. The Specification describes the vacuum tube arrangements, and the combination of a vacuum tube and a gas discharge tube, described in Specification 1,015,433, and also discloses a further discharge tube arrangement, Fig. 7. Phosphor layer 148 is arranged between tubes 142 and 152 surrounding laser rod 132. Tubes 152 and 160 form the walls of a discharge tube 154 having copper electrodes 156, 158. Crossed magnetic and electric fields are provided by a coil 164 and a light reflective and electrode layer 162, to increase the ion path length. Surrounding phosphor layer 148 is a filter layer 150 which transmits the ultra-violet output of tube 154 but reflects the output from the phosphor. The gas pressure is low so that sharp spectral lines are produced, a suitable gas being mercury vapour. A coolant fluid is passed through tubes 262, 264 and may be coloured to act as a filter in addition to, or instead of, layer 150. |
