abstract <PICT:1022982/C6-C7/1> An anode assembly comprises a graphite anode plate 1, and a metal conductor 2, terminating in a bore in said plate and making intimate electrical contact with the walls of said bore, the graphite being impregnated with a wax 3, comprising a hydrocarbon or a chlorinated hydrocarbon which is solid at the working temperature of the anode, to a depth of at least 1/8 inch around the bore. The join between the metal conductor and the graphite may be made by a force fit, a screw thread, or by soldering.
