abstract | a -Hydroxy-isobutyric acid is prepared by oxidizing tert.-butyl alcohol with either a mixture of dinitrogen tetroxide and a minor amount of nitric acid, or dinitrogen tetroxide and traces of moisture sufficient to form nitric acid in situ, at the boiling temperature of the mixture. A catalyst comprising a compound of either copper, nickel, manganese, chromium or cobalt soluble in the reaction mixture may be present. The temperature is adjusted to maintain the boiling temperature as the reaction proceeds, and may be continuous. |
