abstract Alcohols are produced by the liquid phase partial oxidation of hydrocarbons with molecular oxygen in the presence of a dehydrated form of ortho-boric acid, the reaction mixture being worked up to recover unreacted hydrocarbons and oxidation products including alcohols, the boron compound being recovered as orthoboric acid which is then dehydrated to metaboric acid in two successive stages at a temperature of from 75 to 300 DEG C. the metaboric acid then being recycled to the oxidation reaction step. Examples describe the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol.
