titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to electrical resistance heaters
abstract 1,027,163. Immersion heaters. MORGANITE THERMAL DESIGNS Ltd. Aug. 10, 1962 [Aug. 23, 1961], No. 30375/61. Heading H5H. An immersion heater capable of operating up to a temperature of 1200‹ C. for maintaining metals or alloys in a molten condition comprises a high temperature electrical resistance radiant heater element 8 of refractory material formed from a tube with two diametrically opposite slots extending first longitudinally from one end to give a cold portion to which terminals 10 are connected then helically nearly to the other end to give an incandescent portion supported by insulating refractory spacers 6, 7 in a metal sheath 5 to heat the sheath by radiant heating. Alternatively the element may be U-shaped. The material of the element may be silicon carbide or molybdenum disilicide, spacers 6, 7 may be of alumina or sillimanite and the sheath may be of a material based on silicon carbide such as self-bonded silicon carbide, carbon-bonded silicon carbide, nitridebonded silicon carbide, or silicon nitride, aluminium nitride, plumbago, stainless steel, titanium, zirconium, chromium, irradium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten or cast iron with an internal anti-oxidizing coating such as chromium and with or without an external coating of refractory ceramic or other material resistant to attack by molten metal.
