titleOfInvention Process for the desulphurisation of combustion gases
abstract Combustion gases are desulphurized by contacting the hot gases with an oxidation catalyst e.g. Pt or V2O5 to oxidize SO2 to SO3 and subsequently adsorbing the SO3 by passage over a solid carbonaceous material, e.g. activated charcoal or coke. The catalytic oxidation and the adsorption of SO3 may take place in either a fixed, moving or fluidized bed or a dust cloud. In the example, exhaust gases from an oil furnace are passed over a Pt wire catalyst at 450 DEG C. and then through a fixed bed of activated carbon at 150 DEG C. The adsorbent may be regenerated by heating to 300-400 DEG C. or by treatment with H2O, when H2SO4 is produced.
