abstract | Crude iron containing in percentage by weight .C.3.5-4.5 .Mn.0.7-4 .Si.0.3-1.3 .P.0.08-0.3 .S.not more than 0.06 .Fe.balance is pre-refined until the silicon content is 0.2% or below and is then refined in a bottom-blown converter using initially a normal blast with cooling additions of ore and scrap, and then after six minutes stopping the addition of coolant and blowing with blast enriched to 30-45% oxygen. Pre-refining may be carried out by top-blowing the crude iron in a ladle with a blast containing 40-80% of oxygen. The converter slag may be used as an additive in a Besserver or Thomas refining process. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 705,954. |
