titleOfInvention Preparation of esters
abstract Esters are prepared by reacting a C2- 4 alkylene oxide with a saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid in the presence of an alkali metal halide or an alkaline earth metal halide. The term "alkylene oxide" includes epichlorhydrin. Suitable reaction temperatures lie in the range 50-150 DEG C. The preferred catalyst is LiCl. The mono-basic acid may be an alkyl, aryl or alkenyl compound and may be substituted by carboalkoxy or carbohydroxyalkoxy groups. If the acid contains a polymerizable group a phenolic or copper salt type polymerization inhibitor may be used. When preparing hydroxyalkyl methacrylates using a LiCl catalyst a particularly pure product, which does not polymerize on standing, is obtained by venting off unreacted alkylene oxide at the end of the reaction and adding oxalic, oxydiacetic, adipic acid or a mixture thereof, agitating the mixture and filtering to give a lithium free product. The examples relate to the hydroxyalkyl esters of methacrylic, acrylic, acetic benzoic and maleic acids. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 956,412.
