titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to ion sources
abstract 1,083,626. Ion sources. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 15, 1966 [April 17, 1965], No. 16606/66. Heading H1D. An ion source comprises gas discharge electrodes in the form of first and second flat parallel cathode plates and cylindrical anode 12. The first cathode plate 11 is on the lower side of magnet 10, the second cathode plate being a molybdenum coating 9 on block 8 of permanently magnetized material. Lowreluctance magnetic circuit of soft iron envelope 5, upper side 6 and flat bottom 7 completely surrounds the electrodes except for the aperture in plate 11 and results in a magnetic field along the anode axis. Annular permanent magnet 10 is provided under 6 and magnetized in the same direction as block 8. The annular magnet, which may be magnetized axially or radially, produces a larger ion beam current density and allows the exit aperture to be increased to one third to one half of the anode diameter. Depression 13 of diameter of about one third of diameter of block 8 and depth approximately equal to the depression diameter, also increases the current. 14 is a pressure control for deuterium tritium filling. Typical operating pressures disclosed range from 10<SP>-3</SP> mm. Hg. to 2 x 10<SP>-2</SP> mm. Hg. The Figure shows an ion source incorporated in a neutron generator.
