titleOfInvention | Sealing containers |
abstract | Compositions for sealing containers comprise 16 to 92 parts by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 15 to 40 weight per cent of vinyl acetate and having an inherent viscosity of 0.59 to 0.85 c.c./gm. at 30 DEG C.; 5 to 75 parts by weight of a compatible resin of molecular weight 300 to 3000 selected from hydroabietyl alcohol, terpene resin, glycerol ester of wood rosin/maleic anhydride adduct, hydrogenated, disproportionated or polymerized wood rosin and polyhydric alcohol esters of abietic acid or hydrogenated wood rosin; and a wax. The wax may be a paraffin, microcrystalline, polyethylene, polypropylene or amide wax, or lanolin, beeswax, shellac wax, montan wax or carnauba wax. The compositions may also comprise extenders, slip agents, fillers, pigments, blowing agents, antioxidants, fungicides and bactericides, and may be used to make closure gaskets or for sealing can seams. Examples describe compositions comprising ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers and glyceryl esters of hydrogenated rosin together with (I) paraffin and microcrystalline waxes, china clay and titanium dioxide; (II) microcrystalline and paraffin waxes and china clay; (III) paraffin wax and china clay; (IV) microcrystalline wax, butyl rubber and china clay; (VII) hydrogenated castor oil wax, stearamide, titanium dioxide and antioxidant (2,6-di-t.-butyl-3-methyl phenol) and (IX) hydrogenated castor oil wax titanium dioxide and antioxidant.ALSO:Compositions for sealing containers comprise 16 to 92 parts by weight of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 15 to 40 weight per cent of vinyl acetate and having an inherent viscosity of 0.59 to 0.85 cc/gm. at 30 DEG C., and 5 to 75 parts by weight of a compatible resin of molecular weight 300 to 3000 selected from hydroabietyl alcohol, terpene resin, glycerol ester of wood rosin/maleic anhydride adduct, hydrogenated, disproportionated or polymerized wood rosin, and the polyhydric alcohol esters of abietic acid or hydrogenated wood rosin. The compositions may also contain extenders, e.g. chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated paraffin oil, chlorinated polyphenyls, polyisobutylenes, butyl rubber, polyisoprenes and polypropylene waxes; slip agents, e.g. silicones, hydrogenated castor oils and amide waxes; fillers and pigments, e.g. clay, silica, carbon black, whiting, talc, titanium dioxide and iron oxide; blowing agents; antioxidants; fungicides and bactericides; and waxes, e.g. petroleum, amide, polyolefin, lanolin, bees, shellac, montan and carnauba waxes. The compositions may be used to make closure gaskets or for sealing can seams. Examples describe compositions comprising (V) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers and glyceryl esters of hydrogenated rosin, together with (I) paraffin and microcrystalline waxes, china clay and titanium dioxide; (II) microcrystalline and paraffin waxes and china clay; (III) paraffin wax and titanium dioxide; (IV) microcrystalline wax, butyl rubber and china clay; (VII) hydrogenated castor oil, stearamide, titanium dioxide and antioxidant (2,6-di-t. butyl-3-methyl phenol); (VIII) polypropylene wax, stearamide, titanium dioxide and antioxidant; and (IX) hydrogenated castor oil, titanium dioxide and antioxidant; and compositions of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers with (VI) hydrogenated abietyl alcohol; (X) dimerized wood rosin and titanium dioxide; and (XI) and (XII) glyceryl esters of maleic anhydride/rosin adducts and titanium dioxide. |
