titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to encapsulated materials |
abstract | Droplets or particles of a first reactive substance which is a hardening reagent for resins, a curing agent for natural or synthetic elastomers, or which is capable of reacting with one or more substances to produce an adhesive or surface coating composition are enclosed in a solid covering by dispersing the droplets or particles in a phase (liquid or gas) containing a substance which reacts with the particulate material at the particle faces to form a solid compound which coats the particle. A specific example relates to the encapsulation of a solution in bis-(tetrahydrofurfuryl) phthalate of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate complex by dispersion in a low-boiling naphtha hydrocarbon solvent to which vinyl cyclohexane diepoxide is added. The capsules are used as an internal curing agent for a bifunctional epoxide resin ("Epikote" (Trade Mark) 828) into which they are mixed-the application of pressure thereto rupturing the capsules and causing hardening of the resin. In a second example, Epikote 828 mixed with a little finely-divided silica is dispersed in the same hydrocarbon solvent to which the BF3 complex of the first example is added. A paste is prepared by mixing the capsules so formed with a solution of the BF3 complex in bis-(tetrahydrofurfuryl) phthalate to produce a composition which is a self-curing adhesive on the application of pressure. A third example relates to the encapsulation of diethylene triamine (plus silica) droplets in the same way using tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate as the reactant. The capsules produced may be used as an internal hardener for " Epikote " 828 as before. |
