abstract Sulphite diesters of formula <FORM:1107110/C2/1> where R = a substituted or unsubstituted acyclic alkynyl group and R1 = a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group are made by a process comprising reacting an alcohol of formula ROH or R1OH with thionyl chloride at - 5-30 DEG C. to provide a chlorosulphinate and then reacting said chlorosulphinate with an alcohol of formula R1OH or ROH respectively at - 10-50 DEG C. The compounds where R = alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl and R1 = haloalkynyl or where R = haloalkyl, halocycloalkyl, haloalkenyl or haloalkynyl and R1 = alkynyl or haloalkynyl are claimed per se. The compounds are used as pesticides.ALSO:Nematocidal compositions contain as an active ingredient a mixed sulphite diester of formula <FORM:1107110/A5-A6/1> where R = a substituted or unsubstituted a cyclic alkynyl group and R1 represents a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group. Nematodes are controlled by treating the soil with one of these compounds.
