titleOfInvention Nuclear reactors
abstract 1,131,076. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 31 March, 1966 [29 April, 1965], No. 18159/65. Heading G6C. In an integral, pressurized water nuclear reactor, having the reactor core and heat exchanger in a single pressure vessel, control is effected by the vertical movement of control rods in the core. Fixed, vertical fuel elements 31 are grouped in a number of separate assemblies 4, which form the core and each of the assem - blies is associated with, and locked to, a reactivity control mechanism 6, 21. Each control mechanism comprises a number of control rods 33, flexibly linked to a carrier 45, supported at the lower end of the vertical shaft 21. The control rods are movable longitudinally between the fuel elements. To permit differential dimension changes between the fuel assemblies and their control mechanisms the former engage a grid 9 immediately above the core upper surface and the latter are mounted on a second grid spaced vertically above the first, the grids, assemblies and mechanisms being urged together by springs seated at the second grid. In an emergency, the control elements are driven downwards into the core by a coiled spring surrounding the control mechanism drive rod inside the housing 18. The control rods are withdrawn vertically from the core against the thrust of the coiled spring. The rods 33 have a limited lateral movement relative to carrier 6 as the domed heads 47 rest in the apertures 46. Coolant flows upwards through the assembly 4 and leaves the shroud 5 by the ports 72. The grid 9 is cooled by a minor flow through port 73.
