New penicillins of Formula I wherein R is phenyl, substituted phenyl or thienyl, n is 0 or 1 and is a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring, are prepared by reacting the bis alkali metal salt of a penicillin II: wherein R, n and have the above meanings, with an acetoxymethyl halide in an inert solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide. Typical compounds are the bis- (acetoxymethyl) esters of α-carboxybenzyl penicillin, D-α-(cyclohex-4-ene-cis-2-carboxyl-1-carbonylamino)-benzyl penicillin, D-α-(cyclohexane - cis - 2 - carboxy - 1 - carbonylamino)- benzyl penicillin, D-α-(exo-3,6-endoxo-cyclohex - 4 - ene - cis - 2 - carboxy - 1 - carbonylamino)-benzyl penicillin and α-carboxy-3-thienylmethyl penicillin. |
