titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to glass fibre strands |
abstract | 1,140,003. Treating glass fibres. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. 17 March, 1967 [21 March, 1966], No. 12608/67. Addition to 1,061,636. Heading D1P. A glass fibre strand suitable for use as a reinforcement for rubber is produced by drawing molten glass streams through orifices in a bushing to form individual glass fibres, moving the fibres away from the bushing at a speed of 5,000-20,000 feet per minute and forming them into a strand, applying an aqueous sizing solution comprising 1-8% by weight of a binder which is the reaction product of a partial ester of a poly-carboxylic acid which contains at least one unesterified carboxyl group with a compound containing more than one epoxy group per molecule, 0.1-2% by weight of a resin to glass coupling agent and 0.1-1% by weight of a glass fibre lubricant to the strand, drying the strand and coating it with an aqueous rubber adhesive composition containing a rubber latex, e.g. a butadienestyrene, butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine or neoprene latex, and a heat curable resin, e.g. a resorcinol formaldehyde resin, and drying and curing the adhesive, e.g. at 350‹-500‹F. 10-25% by weight of adhesive based on the weight of the strands may be applied. A plurality of ends of strand or yarn may be combined, coated with a rubber adhesive, twisted and plied with other coated ends to form a coated cord. optionally made into a loosely woven fabric and used to reinforce rubber articles e.g. tires. The aqueous sizing composition may comprise a reaction product of a maleic anhydride rosin adduct and vinyl cyclohexane diepoxide, a surface agent which is a reaction product of ethylene oxide and polypropyleneglycol, gamma-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane, acetic acid, gammaaminopropyl triethoxy silane, hydrogenated tallow acid reacted with hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine, melamineformaldehyde resin and lauryl pyridinium chloride. |
