abstract | 1,142,377. Chewable materials. COLGATEPALMOLIVE CO. 6 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 44752/66. Heading A5B. A chewable material (preferably in the form of a unitary mass), for cleaning the teeth, comprises 15 to 25% by weight of a watersoluble protein (e.g. gelatin); a vegetable gum (e.g. gum acacia) and a liquid polyhydric alcohol in which the gum and protein are soluble in the range 50‹ to 90‹C. (e.g. glycerine), there being present approximately equal weights of the protein and gum, and the weight of alcohol present being approximately twice the weight of the protein. An insoluble finely divided dental polishing agent (e.g. sodium metaphosphate, aluminas, chalks, calcium phosphates, aluminium silicates or zirconium silicate) is also preferably present. Other ingredients which may be present include water; non-fermentable sweetening agents e.g. sodium or calcium cyclamate or saccharine; preservatives for gelatin e.g. sodium benzoate; germicidal or anti-bacterial agents e.g. benzethonium chloride, cetyl pyridinium chloride, lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride or hexachlorophene; dispersing agents e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitan monocleate; and colouring and flavouring agents. The material may be prepared by blending and heating to 50‹ to 90‹C. a dispersion of gelatin, gum and polishing agent in glycerine and a solution of the other ingredients in water. |
