titleOfInvention Vinyl ester polymer dispersions and their production
abstract 1,148,060. Aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 5 Aug., 1966 [6 Aug., 1965], No. 35105/66. Heading C3P Aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers are formed by polymerizing the monomer(s) in aq. phase in the presence of an emulsifier comprising (A) 15-70% of at least one copolymer of 50-90% of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with at least one other nonionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer and which is soluble in water at a pH of at least 4, (B) 15-70% of at least one polyalkylene oxide or its derivative which is not sulphonated and (C) 15-70% of at least one sulphonated long chain alcohol having at least 8 carbon atoms. The vinyl ester polymer may be derived from vinyl propionate and acrylic acid or sodium vinyl sulphonate, tert-butyl acrylate and methyl vinyl carbinol or vinyl acetate acrylic acid or n-butyl acrylate. The emulsifier may acomprise (A) a copolymer of acrylic acid, acrylamide, methyl acrylate and/or acrylonitrile, (B) an adduct of ethylene oxide and sperm oil alcohol or iso-octylphenol and (C) a sulphonation product of (B). The polymerization may be in the presence of vinylpyrrolidone potassium persulphate, formic acid, ascorbic acid, n-dodecyl mercaptan. The aq. dispersion may be compounded with methyl cellulose, sodium metahexaphosphate, ammonium polyacrylate, aq. ammonia, chalk, rutile, kaolin, talc, dolomite, zinc white, titanium dioxide, china clay, blanc fixe, satin white and/or casein.
