Acetals and mercaptals are prepared by refluxing together in the presence of an oxygencontaining atmosphere (a) an aromatic aldehyde free from basic and acidic functional groups having one benzene ring and not more than 12 carbon atoms, (b) a compound of the formula HXR where X is O or S and R is alkyl or aralkyl of 5-15 carbon atoms or a group of the formula -(C n H 2n O) x R<SP>1</SP>, where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, n is 2 or 3, x is 1-3 and the group contains at least 5 carbon atoms, (c) a finely divided activated carbon which exhibits an acid pH in aqueous suspension and (d) an entraining agent for water. The mixture preferably contains at least 1À5 moles of activated carbon and 3-15 moles of alcohol or thiol per mole of aldehyde. Preferred entraining agents are aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. |
