titleOfInvention Modified Polyoxymethylenes
abstract 1,165,036. Modified polyoxymethylenes. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 2 Aug., 1967 [2 Aug., 1966], No. 35416/67. Addition to 1,103,730. Heading C3P. A process for preparing a modified polyoxymethylene, i.e. a polymer containing -OCH 2 - groups and also incorporated groups derived from the modifying agent, comprising reacting at temperatures of 0‹ to 200‹ C. in an acidic reaction medium a polyoxymethylene having a number average molecular weight of at least 10,000 with one or more formals of formula where R 1 , R 2 are hydrogen or C 1-3 alkyl, R 2 may be C 6-10 aryl or aralkyl when R 1 is hydrogen, n is 1 or 2, and/or where R 3 is phenyl, -(CH 2 ) m CN, -(CH 2 ) m COOR, or hydrogen, m is 0 to 3, R is C 1-4 alkyl, R 6 is hydrogen or, when R 3 is hydrogen, R 6 is phenyl, -(CH 2 ) m CN or -(CH 2 ) m COOR, and/ or where R 7 is hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl, and R 8 is -(CH 2 ) m CN or -(CH 2 ) m COOR. Unreacted polyoxymethylene may be depolymerized and removed by the use of caustic alkali or a strong amine, suitably in the presence of an alcohol. The acidic medium for the modifying process may be supplied by a Lewis acid or its oxonium salt, e.g. PF 5 , BF 3 . In the examples, polyoxymethylenes are treated with the following compounds, which are incorporated into the main chain of the polymer by the process: cishexahydrobenzo - 1,3 - dioxolan, cis- and transhexahydrobenzo - 1,3 - dioxan, trans - hexahydrobenzotrioxepan, 4 - phenyl - 1,3 - dioxan, and 5-methyl-5-carboethoxy-1,3-dioxan.
