[Also in Division C5] A catalyst which has been prepared by impregnating active carbon with an aqueous solution of a heat decomposable compound of Co or Ni is activated by contacting the catalyst with a boiling normally liquid hydrocarbon and thereafter separating the catalyst from the liquid and heating to 250‹C to 500‹C for not more than 4 hours. The carbon prior to impregnating with Co or Ni may be successively treated with NH 3 and HNO 3 .
