titleOfInvention Buffer Pipe
abstract 1,188,259. Cleaning pipes. OKUDA IRON WORKS CO. Ltd. 3 July, 1968 [18 July, 1967], No. 31772/68. Heading F2P. The wall of a buffer pipe 1, used, e.g. for pipelines to be buried underground and adapted to relieve stresses in the pipeline due for instance to subsidence, is provided with one, or more radially outwardly projecting circumferential corrugations 2 the void within each corrugation being filled with resilient material 4 which is, or is rendered, impermeable to the material the pipe is designed to carry when in use and which is levelled off to be substantially flush with the inside circumferential wall surface of the pipe. The filling material, made of water-impermeable synthetic sponge rubber, is covered internally by a neoprene rubber lining 7, the pipe 1 having internal and external linings 5, 6 of tar epoxy resin. The outer surface of the pipe may be given a coating of mixed coal tar enamel and glass fibres. The corrugations can be formed by surrounding the pipe with constraining members, at all points except at the locations intended for the corrugations, so that the pipe within the constraining members cannot expand, or shrink. Hydraulic pressure is then applied to both ends of the pipe so that the corrugation will be formed at the chosen place on the pipe. The wall thickness of the corrugations is substantially the same as that of the remainder of the pipe wall.
