titleOfInvention | Polymeric compositions for use in backsizing automotive carpets |
abstract | 1,205,903. Coated carpeting. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 26 Feb., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 10282/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A composition for use in backsizing Automotive carpeting is backsized with a composition comprising (a) 30 to 45% by weight of an ethylene/vinyl ester copolymer containing from 15 to 35% by weight of units derived from the vinyl ester, the copolymer having a melt index of less than 50; and (b) 55 to 70% by weight of a micro-crystalline or Fischer-Tropsch wax having a melting point of at least 165‹F and a needle penetration value of less than 10; the percentages by weight of components (a) and (b) being based on the combined weight of components (a) and (b). Vinyl ester: a vinyl alcohol ester of a C 1 -C 4 saturated monocarboxylic acid, as exemplified by vinyl formate acetate, propionate and butyrate. Wax: microcrystalline wax of m.p. 165- 200‹F or Fischer-Tropsch wax of m.p. 165- 250‹F having a needle penetration value of about 7. The composition may include a filler, resin extender or polyolefin exemplified by polyethylene having a melt index of from 10 to 125. The composition should preferably contain at least 25% by weight of components (a) and (b) combined, such as 30 parts copolymer-wax blend to 70 parts polyethylene. Carpets comprising nylon or polypropylene yarn tufted on to backing material composed of jute or spun bonded polypropylene, are backsized with at least 8 ounces of the composition per square yard of carpet, at least 9.5 ounces in the case of compositions containing the polyolefin. The composition may be applied to the bottom surface of the backing material in the form of a melt or powder. The composition (without polyolefin) and polyolefin may be applied sequentially e.g. as powders from separate hoppers. The backsized carpet is then heated to a temperature of 350-400‹F and moulded to a desired shape. |
