abstract 1,224,253. Composite staple fibre. KANEGAFUCHI BOSEKI K.K., and SNIA VISCOSA SOCIETA NAZIONALE INDUSTRIA APPLICAZIONI VISCOSA S.p.A. 4 June, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 26511/68. Heading B5B. A crimped conjugate staple fibre having an improved spinnability, wherein at least two different synthetic polymers are bonded in an eccentric relation to each other along the fibre axis, is chatacterized in that the length (L), free length (F), number of crimps (N 0 ) and fineness (d) of said fibres satisfy simultaneously all of the following four formulµ:- The ratio F/L is the free length ratio, where F is the maximum length of one of the staple fibres when it is mounted on a smooth plane under no tension and no mutual restriction between the fibres, and L is the fibre length when a load of 1 mg./denier is applied; N 0 is the number of pitches/25 mm. of staple fibre. The staple fibres are made by feeding a tow composed of crimpable conjugate filaments into a liquid at a temperature of at least 70‹ C., e.g. boiling water or glycerine at 70‹ to 100‹ C., at a constant rate to develop crimps latent in the filament, removing the crimped tow at a lower rate than the feeding rate so that the tow proceeds under a tension of about 1 mg./denier, squeezing the tow, which is then dried and cut. The two different synthetic polymers may be a homopolyamide and a copolyamide such as poly-#-capramide and a copolymer of #-caprolactam and hexamethylene-diammonium isophthalate or terephthalate; a homopolyester and a homopolyester ether such as polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene paroxybenzoate; polypropylenes having different intrinsic viscosities. Other examples are disclosed.
