" Islands-in-a-sea " type of multicore composite synthetic filaments, cross-sections of which have the appearance of a number of islands in a sea comprise a number of polymeric micro-fine filamentary components (" island " components) extending in parallel relationship along the length of the composite filament and having a non-flat cross-section, and a bonding polymeric component (" sea" component) which incorporates the island components into a composite filamentary body. The sea is composed of 90 to 99.5% by weight of polystyrene, a polymer of a styrene derivative or a styrene copolymer and 0À5 to 10% by weight of a polyether selected from the class consisting of polyalkylene glycols and ethers, esters, ether esters, amines and thioethers thereof and mixtures of two or more of these. The proportion of the polyether is preferably 0À5 to 5%. The styrene-type polymer may be polystyrene, polyalpha-methylstyrene, or a halogenated styrene polymer. The polyalkylene glycol may be polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol or polybutylene glycol. The derivatives of polyalkylene glycol may include alkyl-phenol ethers, alkyl ethers, alkyl amines, alkyl amides, alkylthioethers, phosphoric esters and their sodium salts and fatty acid amides. The island components of the composite filament are mainly composed of polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate or polyoxyethylene benzoate, polyamides or polyolefins. In an example, polyethylene terephthalate as the island component and a mixture of polystyrene with 0À5% by weight of polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 20,000 as the sea component are simultaneously melt extruded at 285 C. by means of the spinneret assembly of a type adapted for the spinning of " islandsin-a-sea" composite filaments to form composite filaments according to the invention. Both components are melt extruded at the same rate and the filaments are drawn using a pin at 78 C. and a plate at 120 C. |
