A metallurgical grinding and polishing machine includes a vertical driven spindle 7, a sleeve 9 rotatable with the spindle 7, having a horizontal flange 11 above which the spindle 7 projects, and a driving plate 8 for a grinding wheel or polishing table (not shown) located by the end of the spindle 7, and secured to the flange 11. The driving plate is secured by a block 12 bolted to the flange 8, and a pin 33 is engageable with the wheel or table for drive transmission. An electric motor 6 drives through a gear-box 4, and a water jet may be projected on to the grinding wheel via a nozzle (16), Fig. 2 (not shown). A clamping member 21 may mount a column (not shown) for holding a specimen during polishing.
