abstract 1,252,473. Fire-resistant acrylic resins by stretching. ROHM G.m.b.H. 28 Aug., 1969 [31 Aug., 1968], No. 42945/69. Heading C3P. A fire-resistant acrylic resin such as polymethyl methacrylate is rendered fire-resistant by being permanently stretched by 30 to 80% and by containing at least one fire-retarding agent. The resin is preferably biaxially stretched by 30 to 80% along each of the axes of stretching and contains a phosphorus compound, preferably a halogen-containing phosphorus compound as the fire-retardant. Such a fireretardant is used in such an amount that the phosphorus content of the resin is at least 0-8% by wt, and the halogen, i.e. chlorine or bromine, content is at least 1-2 wt. per cent or at least 2-7 wt. per cent respectively. The stretching may be carried out prior to, or simultaneously with making an article from the resin. Specifically disclosed are domes made from polymethyl methacrylate containing trichloroethyl phosphate and phosphoric acid in admixture, and a phosphoric acid polyester of the formula C 14 H 28 O 9 P 3 Cl 5 . Six domes are disclosed, three being unstretched, and the other three being biaxially stretched by 50%.
