abstract 1,258,384. Casting composite articles. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 30 July, 1970 [25 Aug., 1969], No. 36910/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H1] A method of casting straps on to portions of a plurality of battery plates, the said portions and straps consisting of lead or alloys thereof, comprises cleaning the portions, coating the portions with a lead alloy having a melting point at least 200‹ F. lower than the melting point of the portions, and bringing the coated portions into contact with the strap-forming material in a mould while the coating is still in a molten state. The lead alloy coating is preferably a lead-tin-bismuth alloy melting below 320‹ F. and containing between 20 and 70% bismuth and 20 and 75% tin. A flux may be applied before coating with the lead alloy, suitable flux compositions including an aqueous solution of stannous chloride and a wetting agent, and rosin dissolved in alcohol or ammonium or sodium hydroxide. The strapforming material consists essentially of lead with small amounts of Ca, Sb, Sn and/or As added, melts at around 580‹ F. and is at a temperature of about 800‹ F. when it first contacts the coated portions of the battery plates.
