abstract | 1,274,491. Lasers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 5 Aug., 1969 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 39235/69. Heading H1C. In an end pumped laser, the active medium comprises thin rectangular elements 4 of neodymium doped glass separated and cooled by a liquid 13 of refractive index similar to that of the elements. The liquid is stated to lessen the requirements for accurate optical flatness of the element faces it contacts by an order of magnitude. A suitable liquid, such as dimethyl sulphoxide is contained in a reservoir 14 and is pumped between the elements 4 via conduit 15 and guides 16, and then passes to heat exchanger 18. The active medium is optically pumped by xenon flash lamps 8 backed by an alumina reflector 9, and a filter (not shown) may be used to pass only optical radiation to the elements 4. A window 3 positioned adjacent the elements has a coating 10 transparent to pumping radiation but reflecting to coherent radiation from the elements, and the laser may therefore be used either as an amplifier for incoming radiation such as 7, or as a generator by coating window 6 with partially reflecting material. Alternatively separate mirrors may be used. A truncated prism 20 and a square plano-convex lens 19 may be used to direct the pumping radiation on to the elements, the radiation density at face 10 being greater than that at face 21 by a factor n<SP>2</SP>, where n is the refractive index of the prism. A geometric relationship between the curvature of lens 19 and the element dimensions is given. The elements may have different thicknesses and dopant concentrations. |
