titleOfInvention | Method of forming patterns on substrate surfaces |
abstract | 1283762 Ornamenting GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 3 Sept 1969 [6 Sept 1968 18 Aug 1969] 43690/69 Heading B6G A random pattern is formed on a surface by applying to the surface an initially all-over coating of a retractable liquid having a surface tension at least 2 dynes/cm. above the critical surface tension of wetting of the surface of the substrate, and subsequently drying the formed pattern. The retractable liquid comprises a colourant, e.g. dyes, pigments carried in a vehicle including solvents and non-solvents. The substrates may be plastics, metals, glass. Specified polymer substrates are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polyhexamethylene adipate, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinylfluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene. The coating may be applied by wiping, doctor blade, draw bar. The random patterns produced may be changed by (1) changing dyes, changing or including pigments; (2) utilizing different vehicles; (3) altering the viscosity of the retractable liquid, e.g. by adding a thickener such a polyvinyl alcohol or cellulose derivatives; (4) changing the surface tension of the retractable liquid; (5) altering the thickness of the deposit of the coating; (6) changing the critical surface tension of wetting of the surface, e.g. in the case of metal substrates applying a coating of paint or plastics, and in the case of plastics utilizing a plasticizer. Vehicles that swell, or partially solubilize the surface cause the dyes to colour all of the surface, the dyes being concentrated in the globules after retraction. The pattern may be covered with a transparent, wearresistant top coating, e.g. of urethane polymers. Examples of dyes and pigments are given. |
