titleOfInvention Production of fibre-reinforced resinous articles
abstract 1287639 Laminates SOC RHODIACETA 24 Nov 1969 [25 Nov 1968] 57471/69 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D1 and H1] A fibre-reinforced resinous article is produced by forming an assembly comprising one or more layers comprising mechanically-strong and heatstable multi-filament reinforcing yarns in association with yarns of a heat-stable resin containing a volatile solvent in an amount such that the resin solvent composition becomes liquid at an elevated temperature, and heating the assembly to a temperature at which the resin-solvent composition first becomes liquid and then resolidifies as the solvent evaporates. The heatstable resins or yarns are such that they do not undergo significant decomposition when heated almost indefinitely at 200‹ C. nor during heating for at least a few seconds at 500‹ C. The reinforcing yarns may be indefinite length or relatively short length and may be in the form of woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics. The reinforcing layer may contain electrically conductive fibres, e.g. copper wire. The reinforcing yarns may be of quartz, metal, glass, boron, carbon, aromatic polyamide, polyimide, polyamide-imide or pyrolysed acrylic fibres. Suitable heat-stable resins are aromatic polyamides, polyimides and polyamide-imides. The heating may be effected under pressure. The heat-stable resin may contain 0À5-50% by weight of the solvent. Unstretched yarns produced by dry extrusion spinning of a resin solution with partial removal of the solvent, e.g. N-methyl-pyrrolidone-2, may be used, layers of woven, knitted or non-woven fabric of yarns made from the heatstable resin compositions being stacked alternately with the layers of reinforcing yarns to form the assembly which is hot-pressed so that the yarns made from the heat-stable polymer composition pass through a transient liquid state and the liquid mass travels across the interstices of the reinforcing fabric and hardens as the residual solvent is removed. Alternatively yarn made from the solvent containing heat-stable resin composition may be associated in a single fabric with the heat-stable mechanically-strong yarn forming the reinforcing layer, e.g. by wrapping or twisting the yarns about one another and then weaving or knitting the resulting yarn or by simple juxtaposition by alternating the yarns when weaving or knitting, stacking the resulting fabrics and subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure. The fibres reinforced articles may be used in the production of rocket cones, radomes and solenoids.
