titleOfInvention Apparatus for continuous casting
abstract 1307424 Continuous casting GENERAL MOTORS CORP 23 April 1970 [26 May 1969 (2)] 30401/72 Divided out of 1307422 Heading B3F A continuous casting apparatus includes a melt-holding vessel (10), a mould (12) sealingly connected therewith and a withdrawal mechanism (56) arranged to withdraw a casting 54 from the mould intermittently. The mould has three zones. The first zone is of relatively low heat conductivity and of smaller internal diameter than the second zone and comprises a ZrO 2 ring 34 and BN nozzle 43. The second zone is of relatively high heat conductivity, tapers towards the inlet end of the mould, and comprises a water-cooled Be-Cu tube 36. The third zone that is of lower heat conductivity than the second includes a graphite liner 40 and tapers non-uniformly towards the outlet end of the mould. The apparatus is employed in the casting method described in Specification 1,307,422.
