titleOfInvention | Continuous production of water-soluble phenol formaldehyde resins |
abstract | 1323301 Polymerisation apparatus SAINTGOBAIN 1 July 1970 [3 July 1969] 31789/70 Heading B1X [Also in Division C3] An apparatus for the continuous production of water-soluble phenol-formaldehyde resin comprises storage vessels 1, 2, 3 for phenol, HCHO and an alkaline catalyst respectively, a mixing device 4 for homogeneously mixing the components at a temperature not above 45‹C, which components are continuously supplied from the storage vessels, a reactor 7 which comprises a coil 9 through which the reaction mixture flows, the coil being immersed in a fluid, such as water, at a temperature of 80‹-90‹C, the rate of flow of the reaction mixture and the temperature through the coil being controllable such that the reaction proceeds with the liquid mixture remaining homogeneous. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 for the production of unmodified phenol-formaldehyde resin, the mixture leaving reactor 7 passes through cooling apparatus 11 and then into a neutralisation vat 12. In other embodiments the phenol-formaldehyde resin leaving reactor 7 is condensed with urea, dicyandiamide or melamine in a second reactor of the same construction as reactor 7, the homogeneity of the product being preserved. Suitable catalysts include barium hydroxide monohydrate, pentahydrate or octahydrate, or NaOH. |
