titleOfInvention Tubular heat-exchangers
abstract 1329538 Tubular heat exchangers; thermal regenerators UNITED STIRLING (SWEDEN) AB & CO KB 19 May 1972 23684/72 Headings F4K and F4S A heat exchanger for use in a hot gas engine comprises tubes 9 extending between tube plates 2, 8 integral respectively with coaxial shell sections 1, 7 together forming a easing encircling the tubes, relative movement (e.g. angular or transverse movement) between the shell sections being permitted by a sealing element 10 between opposing end surfaces of the shell sections. An external ring 14 serves to locate and protect the sealing element 10. As shown, the tubular heat exchanger is surmounted by a regenerative heat exchanger 5. Hot gas from the expansion space (i.e. cylinders) of the hot gas engine flows into pipes 6 and thence through regenerator 5 and tubes 9 where the gas is cooled by water circulated over the tubes via casing inlet 11 and outlet 12. Temperature differences between the two ends of the heat exchanger (due e.g. to expansion of pipes 6) may cause misalignment of the axes of the shell sections and bowing of the tubes, these relative movement being permitted by the seal 10. A baffle 13 maintains individual tubes 9 at their correct spacing.
