abstract | 1346594 Quaternary ammonium derivatives of Novolak resins IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 April 1971 [7 May 1970] 22132/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Quaternary ammonium derivatives of Novoalk resins of the general formula wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms or a halogen atom, Y represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 each independently represent an alkyl group containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a cyclo-alkyl group or an aralkyl group, A represents an anion, n is an integer from 1 to 7 and m is an integer from 1 to 9 are prepared by reacting a tertiary amino compound of the general formula with a quaternizing agent of the formula R 3 A wherein R 3 is as stated above and A is an atom or group such that it forms the anion A# as a result of the quaternization reaction.
