titleOfInvention Methods of manufacturing helical gear blanks by cold extrusion process
abstract 1373547 Extruding; making gears; making dies REGIE RATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 18 Nov 1971 [24 Nov 1970 3 Nov 1971] 53660/71 Headings B3P and B3A A helical gear blank is produced by cold extruding a billet 1 through a die 2 using a punch 11 which is mounted for free rotation, the die being formed with a set of helically toothed stages in which the tooth depth increases from stage to stage. Thus the billet is free to rotate to follow the teeth of the die stages. The die teeth taper in depth towards the inlet and outlet of each stage so that the extruded billet is released by each stage before entering the next stage. The billets are extruded successively and each billet pushes the preceding billet through the die. The punch is mounted by roller bearings 19-21 on a plate 15 connected to a movable crosshead 16. The die is arranged to contact the billet surface at the portion which forms the top of the gear teeth as the billet enter the die, Fig. 3 (not shown). The die, which is preferably made of tungsten carbide, may comprise three die elements 29, 30, 33, Fig. 4, clamped between rings 3, 3<SP>1</SP> and each having double tapered teeth with a neck 31. The extruded billet may have its teeth finished by rolling and be centrally bored or alternatively hollow billets may be used and the punch 11 then has a central stem. The helix pitch of the teeth can be checked by measuring the rotation of the punch for a given axial movement. The teeth are formed in the die by electroerosion followed by grinding.
