titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for continuous dyeing of yarns |
abstract | 1374668 Yarn dyeing apparatus UNITIKA Ltd 13 June 1972 [14 June 1971] 27689/72 Heading D1L [Also in Division B6] Apparatus for dyeing a travelling yarn 2 fed from a bobbin 1 to a wind-up spool 10 comprises a dye applicator 5 having at least one discharge aperture through which dye is applied to the yarn from supply 6, a heater 4 located upstream of the applicator 5 and arranged to heat the yarn 2 to a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent used to dissolve the dye, and a drying unit 8 located downstream of applicator 5 to dry the dyed yarn. The dye applicator 5 preferably includes a U-shaped groove 13 (Fig. 2) through which the yarn 2 is passed and a discharge aperture 11 located at the bottom of the groove and supplied with dye via a dye supply pipe 12. The apparatus may be used for the space -or multicolour-dyeing of yarns by arranging two or more applicators 5 on the same or different sides of the travelling yarn and arranging these to discharge dyes of different or the same colour intermittently or continuously onto the yarn [Figs. 3A and B, not shown]. Other methods of producing mottle dyeing effects include selection of different sized apertures 11 in the dye applicator 5, incorporating gas bubbles into the dye solution before it is discharged, supplying a single applicator with two or more different coloured dyes in a random or patterned order (Fig. 8, not shown) or by shutting off the supply of dye to the applicator intermittently during the dyeing operation. This last method may be achieved using an applicator (Fig. 7) having a dye inlet 24 and a discharge aperture 25 connected via a passage 26 which may be randomly and intermittently shut off by reciprocating a piston 22 inside an electromagnet 21 and electric coil 27. Examples relate to the single colour intermittent dyeing of nylon 6 yarns and to the multicolour dyeing of nylon 6, polyester, wool and cotton yarns. |
