titleOfInvention Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and aluminium base articles
abstract 1404068 Anodizing aluminium or aluminium alloy INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 18 Jan 1973 [7 March 1972] 2336/75 Divided out of 1404067 Heading C7B An article made of Al or of an alloy having more than 50 wt per cent of Al is treated as anode in an acid-tree aqueous solution comprising borax at 100‹F to 200‹F using a current density not exceeding 5 amps/sq ft at the article surface and not more than 300 coulombs/sq ft. For example, the article is pre-cleaned and then given the electrolytic treatment in a stainless steel or polypropylene tank using a counter electrode of Cu, stainless steel, Pb or Au. The solution may additionally contain as wetting agent sodium lauryl sulphate and as complexing agent the tetrasodium salt of EDTA, sodium gluconate, Rochelle salt, or sodium citrate. The article may be partly masked for the treatment. The treated article is rinsed and dried. Its surface has been rendered hydrophilic and can be subsequently coated with paint, e.g. with epoxy phenolic, epoxy melamine-, melamine-, epoxy resin-, latex-, oil- or polyurethane-base paint, e.g. electro-chemically with the four last mentioned paints.
