abstract 1410650 Setting up data FERRANTI Ltd 25 Oct 1973 [28 Oct 1972] 49795/72 Heading G3N In apparatus for digitizing information on a drawing, a main index point 2 being movable to transmit co-ordinates relative to origin O of points, such as L,M,N of the drawing to a computer COMP, operational commands may be transmitted to the computer by placing an area, identifying a particular command, of a transparent card 5 movable with the index point, above a previously established subsidiary index point T 1 and operating a switch Q, the computer in response deriving the displacement of index point 2 from the point T 1 to identify the particular area, and hence allowing the performance of the command. In the tracing of line LMN, subsidiary index point T 1 is established by moving the cross-wires of index point 2 to the point T 1 and operating switch R, whence the co-ordinates of point T 1 relative to O are stored in the computer. An area of card 5 marked "LINE" is then placed over point T 1 , and switch Q operated, the resulting calculation by the computer of the co-ordinates of the separation between point 2 and area "LINE" preparing the computer for linear interpolation. With point 2 over points L, M, switch P is operated at each point, the positions of each, as registered on counters C x , Cy counted up or down by moirÚ fringe position transducers being gated via G x , Gy to the computer, the latter passing to tape punch, or magnetic tape recorder, or line by line plotting table and/or cathode ray tube TP a digitized linear interpolation from L to M. Areas "ARC", and "TAN" of card 5 are subsequently placed over point T 1 , switch Q being operated for each, whence point 2 is moved to N, the computer thus interpolating an arc tangent to LM between M & N. Cursor 1 may carry potentiometers enabling arc radii to be fed to the computer. Areas on card 5 may command a circle, or symbols to be inserted on a drawing to be produced. A plurality of interchangeable cards 5 each with a different set of instructions may be provided, the particular card in use being identified for the computer by a switch on the cursor 1. Should the drawing be a building plan with positions of electrical fittings marked on it, the computer may calculate the lengths of cable runs joining them.
