abstract | 1411257 Producing glass PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 21 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 59047/72 Heading C1M Glass is prepared by feeding a free-flowing, glass-forming, aqueous slurry of at least one metal hydroxide, sand and other glass-forming ingredients to a pool of molten glass at a rate sufficient to minimize spattering, segregation of reactants and carry-off of alkali with evolved steam, the metal hydroxide providing from 70- 100% by weight of the alkali metal content of the glass to be formed, and the slurry having a water content of at least 10% by weight, and keeping the temperature of the molten glass at or above the fusion temperature of the combined reactants for a time sufficient to effect reaction, and recovering the resultant glass formed, said glass having the same composition as the molten glass pool. The slurry preferably contains 10-30% by weight water by weight of the alkali metal hydroxide and sand. Preferably the glass formed has a SiO 2 /M 2 O mole ratio of 1-4, where M is a monovalent metal. The metal hydroxide preferably is sodium hydroxide, but the hydroxides of potassium, calcium, lead or aluminium may also be used. The pool of molten glass is preferably of depth 1-6 feet, and is maintained at least at 2300 F. In a modification of the process, a slurry of alkali metal hydroxide and sand only may be charged to a pool of molten metal silicate, so as to produce an alkali metal silicate. |
