abstract | 1419374 Removing iron from chromite UNION CORP (UK) Ltd 13 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53547/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Chromite ore is roasted with chromium metal at 700‹ to 1100‹ C. to produce a mixture of iron and chromic oxide all ingredients remaining in the particulate solid state, and the iron being subsequently leached out. The roasting is preferably effected with 17À5 to 20% chromium metal in air or in enclosed silica containers, using briquetted mixtures of chromite ore and metallic chromium as the furnace charge. The product of the roasting is comminuted, and then leached with, e.g. sulphuric acid to remove iron; separation of chromic oxide from other oxides which may have been contained in the ore may be accomplished by wet magnetic separation. The invention is applicable also to beneficiation of ores, where the iron oxide of the chromite may be only partially reduced and then iron leached out to provide a higher Cr/ Fe ratio in the ore. |
