abstract | 1423047 Quaternary ammonium carboxylic esters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 April 1974 [14 May 1973] 22785/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division Dl] Examples 1, 4, 5 and 6 describe the preparation of quaternary ammonium compounds, used as dyeing retarding agents, having the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are alkyl or alkenyl, R<SP>4</SP> is H or alkyl, at least one of R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>4</SP> having at least 8 carbon atoms and the remainder 1-4 carbon atoms, X is an anion, Y is H or methyl and n is 0 or an average from 1-30. In Example 1 trimethyl dodecyloxycarbonylmethyl ammonium chloride is prepared by heating dodecyl alcohol, chloroacetic acid and p-toluene sulphonic acid monohydrate under reflux in toluene. Trimethylamine is then bubbled through the dried solution of the ester in toluene and the white solid separated by filtration. |
