titleOfInvention | Toner composition employing polymer with side-chain crystallinity |
abstract | 1423291 Polymeric toner particles XEROX CORP 3 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972] 367/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Toner particles suitable for use in electrostatographic reproduction processes comprise a polymer material that is a crystalline homopolymer or copolymer having an amorphous backbone and side-chain crystallinity derived by the polymerization of a monomer material comprising at least 2 wt. per cent of a monomer having an alkyl group of at least 14 carbon atoms, the polymer material preferably having a weight average molecular weight of at least 2000. The polymer material may optionally be mixed with a colourant (e.g. carbon black) or another thermoplastic material. The polymer material may be an addition or condensation polymer and, when a copolymer, may be a random, block or graft copolymer. The examples illustrate toner particles comprising polydocosyl acrylate, docosyl acrylate/styrene copolymer, polytetracosyl methacrylate, tetracosyl acrylate/ styrene copolymer, di-(n-docosyl) fumarate/ styrene copolymer, polydocosyl vinyl ketone, vinyl docosylate/styrene copolymer, pdocosyl styrene/styrene copolymer, N,N-di- (tetracosyl) - acrylamide, vinyl docosyl ether/ styrene copolymer and 2-vinyl-4-docosyl pyridine/styrene copolymer; in all cases the polymer is admixed with carbon black and, in one case, the polymer (docosyl acrylate/styrene copolymer) is further admixed with an amorphous styrene/n-butyl methacrylate copolymer. In a typical preparation of a polymer material, docosyl acrylate (which is preferably prepared by transesterifying ethyl acrylate with docosyl alcohol) and styrene are copolymerized in benzene solution using azosiobutyronitrile as initiator. |
