titleOfInvention Electrode construction for use in electric cells and batteries
abstract 1424354 Method of making electrodes UNIGATE Ltd 5 March 1973 [9 March 1972] 11099/72 Heading H1B A halogen electrode support structure for use in the zinc-halogen cells disclosed in Specifications 1,258,503 and 1,258,502 is made by a process comprising forming pairs of conducting porous layers 14 on an expanded metal strip 12 of, e.g. titanium. A layer-free area 15 separates the layers 14 of each pair and a layer-free area 16 separates successive pairs. The layers 14 are formed at opposite locations on the two sides of the strip 12 by the apparatus shown in Fig. 7. The strip 12 is drawn from a roll 17 through an etching tank 19 and cleansing tank 20 and passes to a hopper 21 containing material 22 comprising, e.g. a mixture of carbon and resin binder. The material 22 is pressed by rolls 27 on to both sides of the strip 12 and the layers 14 are formed by rolls 28 having hollows 29 the strip then passing to an oven for curing the resin. The layer free areas 15, 16 are then bent to the shape shown in Fig. 8 by successive actuations of the punch and die apparatus 41, 38 shown in Fig. 9, the strip 12 being advanced one step between each actuation. Finally, the bent strip 12 provided with the layers 14 is mounted in plastics members 31, 33, 34, e.g. by injection moulding.
