titleOfInvention Pneumatic tyre and wheel assemblies
abstract 1435530 Pneumatic tyre and wheel assemblies INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 27 July 1973 [4 Aug 1972] 35828/73 Heading B7C A pneumatic tyre and wheel assembly comprises a tyre 2 mounted on a wheel rim 7 to define a primary inflation chamber 14, a tyre support structure located in the primary inflation chamber to define a secondary inflation chamber 27, and means responsive to the inflation pressure in the chamber 14 falling below a predetermined value to inflate the support structure so that the latter supports the deflated tyre, the support structure including an annular cushioning layer 11 of expandable material which is displaced radially outwardly when the support structure is inflated to form a cushion between the tread 4 of the tyre and the secondary inflation chamber 27. The layer 11 may be made of a cellular material having a major proportion of closed cells, e.g. a vulcanized rubber or a plastics foam, and may be capable of sealing a hole in the tread 4. The support structure may define the secondary inflation chamber 27 alone (Fig. 1) or in conjunction with the wheel rim (Figs. 5 and 7), and may comprise sidewalls supporting the layer 11 which are formed of different material to the layer 11 (Fig. 1) or are formed integrally with, and of the same material as, the layer 11 (Fig. 5). A carcass 24, e.g. of radial cord construction, having beads 25 may be provided inwardly of the layer 11 and integral sidewalls of the support structure as shown in Fig. 5. In an alternative construction, Fig. 7, the support structure again comprises a carcass but the layer 11 is located radially inwardly of the crown of the carcass. The support structure may be inflated by a bottle (30) of liquid gas, e.g. dichloro-difluoro-methane or monochloro-pentafluoro-ethane, located in a cavity (28) in the body of the wheel and connected to the secondary inflation chamber 27 through a valve arranged to open when the pressure in the primary chamber 14 falls below the predetermined value (Fig. 8, not shown). Passage of gas from the bottle to the chamber 27 may cause an out of balance condition in the wheel and tyre assembly so that a driver will become aware that the tyre 2 is deflated.
