titleOfInvention Multi-ply paper and paperboard
abstract 1435703 Laminating process and apparatus KARL KROYER ST ANNE'S Ltd 15 Aug 1973 [9 Sept 1972] 41958/72 Heading B5N A process for making a multi-ply paper or paper board product comprises wet-laying fibres on a first permeable forming surface, e.g. a Fourdrinier or cylinder mould machine to form a wet-laid ply, dry-laying fibres on a second permeable forming surface to form a dry-laid ply, incorporating a binder in the dry laid ply or in the fibres forming the dry-laid ply, consolidating the binder-containing dry-laid ply by hot pressing, and combining the consolidated dry-laid ply with the wet-laid ply to provide the multi-ply product, the moisture in the wet-laid ply together with the binder in the dry-laid ply being sufficient to laminate the plies together. In a preferred embodiment, a third ply formed by wet-laying fibres is combined with the first two plies. The dry fibres may be mixed with dry powdered binder, the dry mixture being sprayed with water and at least partly consolidated to form the dry-laid ply; alternatively the fibrous layer may be sprayed with a binder or the fibres impregnated with a binder, dried, dry-laid and subsequently sprayed with water. An apparatus for making the product comprises a first permeable forming surface, means for wet laying fibres thereon to form a wet-laid ply, a second permeable forming surface, means for dry laying fibres thereon to form a dry-laid ply, means for incorporating a binder in the dry-laid ply or in the fibres forming the dry-laid ply, means for consolidating the binder-containing dry-laid ply comprising a pressing nip defined between a heatable cylinder and a pressing roll, means for heating the cylinder, and means for combining the two plies. In the embodiment described with reference to Fig. 1, stock from the head-box 14 of the Fourdrinier wet end 11 is deposited on to a forming wire 15 to form a wet-laid web 16. Dry fibres mixed with dry powdered binder are deposited in an air stream through two heads 20, 21 onto a forminous forming wire 22 of device 12, a vacuum box 19 assisting in drawing the fibres on to the wire 22 to form a dry-laid web which is consolidated by press roller 23 and heated cylinder 24 and transferred on to the upper surface of the wet-laid web 16 by suction boxes 17 and 18, a further web from cylinder mould 13 being deposited from wire 26 at roller 28 on to the two-ply product to form a threeply product. In the embodiment described with reference to Fig. 2 the dry laid-fibres mixed with adhesive are deposited by heads 40 and 41 on to the wire 42 and the mixture sprayed with water from heads 43, the moist mixture being passed around a heated cylinder 44 through at least two pressure nips provided by rollers 45 and 46 prior to deposition on the first wet-laid web. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the third ply is formed on a Fourdrinier section.
