titleOfInvention Drying of articles
abstract 1440705 Drying RHONE-PROGIL 13 May 1974 [16 May 1973] 21062/74 Heading F4G A process for removing water from the surface of an article in which the article is immersed successively in a bath (A) for removal of water maintained at boiling point consisting of a liquid drying composition which is-not miscible with water and which comprises a solvent in a rinsing bath (B) maintained at boiling point consisting of the solvent in a rinsing bath (C) consisting of the solvent maintained at a temperature appreciably less than its boiling point and in the vapour emitted by a bath (D) consisting of the solvent maintained at boiling point, the following operations being carried out continuously, the vapours leaving the baths A and B and the vapours leaving the bath C are separately condensed, any water in the condensate is removed, the condensed solvent is passed into the bath C, excess solvent from bath C is passed into bath B, excess solvent in bath B is passed into bath A and the excess liquid from the bath A is recycled in to the bath A after elimination of water therefrom, the vapour leaving the bath D is condensed, any water contained in the condensate is removed and the solvent is recycled to the bath D. The apparatus for the process comprises a tank 1 containing the liquid drying composition which is not miscible with water, and having a heater therein, a decantation tank 33 for separating water from the composition and a recycling circuit for the liquid composition connecting the decantation tank 33 with the water removal tank 1 a first rinsing tank 2 having a heater therein, a space above the tank 1 and the tank 2 being surrounded by walls the upper parts of which are surrounded by a condenser 7, channels pass excess liquid from the tank 2 into the tank 1 and from tank 1 into the tank 33, a second rinsing tank 8, a space above being surrounded by walls the upper parts of the walls being surrounded by a condenser 11, excess liquid flowing into the tank 2 over a partition 27 separating tanks 2 and 8, a duct 13 for recovering the condensate obtained by condensation of vapour rising above the tanks 1, 2 and 8, a separator 14 for eliminating any water contained in the condensate and a duct 25 passes the condensed solvent into the tank 8, a third rinsing tank 42 having a heater therein, the space above the rinsing tank being surrounded by walls, the upper parts of which are surrounded by a condenser 46 a separator 49 for eliminating any water in the condensate and a duct 60 for passing the condensed solvent into the tank 42. The solvent may be 1,1,2-trichloro 1,2,2-trifluoroethane. The tanks 1, 2 may have ultrasonic agitation and the separator has a heater for boiling the condensate the vapour of which is then condensed again. The water rises above the solvent in the tank 33 and separators and is removed therefrom.
