abstract 1443810 Welding by Fusion BRITISH STEEL CORP 3 Dec 1974 [3 Dec 1973 19 Sept 1974] 55887/73 and 40898/74 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] A welded flanged ductile iron pipe 2 includes a flange member 1 having an annular flange portion 3 disposed about the end of the pipe 2 and a substantially cylindrical hub portion 4 extending around and along the pipe, the length (L) of the hub 4 being rotated to the nominal internal diameter (D) of the pipe 2 by the equation where n is a number between 1.10 and 1.60 where L and D are in millimetres the hub 4 being welded around its free end 7 to the outer wall of the pipe 2. In the embodiment described the flange portion 3 includes an axial protruding annular face 5 and a plurality of bores 6 to receive bolts. The outer wall of the hub 4 tapers away from the flange portion 3, the taper increasing abruptly adjacent the free end 7 to facilitate production of the weld 8 which is carried out by means of a low heat input gas shielded metal arc process involving a continuous nickel alloy electrode, also being the filler material, and an inert gas such as argon or helium.
