abstract 1461511 Coated silica W R GRACE & CO 27 March 1974 [18 May 1973] 13662/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division B2] A flatting agent for surface coatings, e.g. varnishes and lacquers, comprises particles of silica, preferably silica gel, silica aerogel, or silica xerogel, of average particle size in the range 1-10 Á, coated with a mixture of a wax and a fatty acid. A flatting agent may contain 5 to 30% of wax and fatty acid mixture and 70-95% of silica gel. The wax and fatty acid preferably each have a melting point of above 40‹ C. Preferred fatty acids are stearic acid, lauric acid, palmitic acid, myristic acid, alpha-eleostearic acid and beta-eleostearic acid and preferred waxes are paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax or polyethylene wax. The flatting agent may be prepared by melt coating, e.g. using a fluid energy mill, on to a particulate silica, a mixture of a fatty acid and a wax.
