titleOfInvention Manufacturing of window envelopes and like articles
abstract 1467826 Applying window patches to envelopes CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL CORP 26 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 13271/74 Heading B8F Window patches 2 are applied to an envelope blank or web 1, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), by transferring a patch cut from a translucent or transparent hot-melt adhesive-coated strip 2A from a vacuum roller 12 on to a blank or web held by suction on a rotating cooled vacuum drum 5 and adhering the patch over a window cut-out in the blank or web by rotating the drum past a heated roller 8. Due to the suction applied through ports 9 over the entire surface of the patches 2 being within the margins of the windows, only the patch edges which overlap the material of the blanks are in contact with the roller 8. The drum may be air-cooled or internally-water coded and additional cooling may be effected by a cooling roller 15. The patches are severed from the strip by co-operating rotary and static knives 18 and 19. The roller 8, which is preferably electrically-heated and has an aluminium outer surface although a heated ceramic roller could be used, is biased against the vacuum drum by springs, an air-cylinder, or, as shown, by a counterweight 23. The patch may be of glassine or polyethylene terephthalate and the hot melt adhesive coating may comprise 30% by weight of ethylene and vinyl acetate copolymer with 70% by weight of paraffin wax.
