titleOfInvention Method of reducing surface friction between a liquid and the surface of a body in the liquid
abstract 1469502 Reducing the frictional resistance of ships UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE 14 May 1974 [16 Feb 1973] 55000/72 Heading B7M [Also in Division F2] The frictional resistance of a ship's hull is reduced by solvating a drag reducing polymeric material, preferably polyethylene oxide or polyacrylamide, with water, ageing the solvated polymeric material for a predetermined period of time so that the friction reduction achieved is maximum and then adding the aged solvated polymeric material to the water prior to contact with the hull. It has been found that the friction reduction achieved increases with the time that the solvated polymeric material is left to age to a maximum value determined by particle size, particle size distribution and concentration of the polymeric component and the Specification discloses two examples to support this finding.
